If you are planning to buy golf balls then you should be aware about a few things so as to make an intelligent and an informed decision. This decision will impact what you purchase and for how much.

Now if you are a beginner you need not go and buy yourself a high end golf ball. In the market there are golf balls that are available for beginners , intermediates and the absolute professionals. The factor is the kind of game you play and how do you play. The ball can vary if you are a long or a short hitter. The ball may vary if you hook more than you slice . That means you need to decide the type of game you play . Usually a short hitter would need the ball to go a long distance than a long hitter.

Rather than worrying about anything that I have said before the best bet for beginners is to get the cheapest possible balls and try to improve the game. At the beginner level you will probably lose a lot of balls and that may impact your budget. You are better off buying golf balls in bulk as that will help reduce cost. Also never ever lose sight of the fact that almost anybody who is an advanced player started as a beginner and patience definitely is a virtue you need to have.

There are two piece low compression balls available from leading manufactures of the ball which help in going good distances with even slower swing speeds. Then there is another type which is two piece performance golf ball which can go longer distances with absolutely no spin. As you gain proficiency in your game then you need to have advanced balls to help keep up with your game and these balls are known as multi layer balls. Each layer of the ball gives you several benefits like the urethane covers give that special spin, soft covers give that feel and firm mantle helps go the distance.

The advanced category of balls come with very high prices and make sure to check at all stores and compare prices before you buy the high end variety of golf balls. These golf balls definitely give you an edge when you play professionally but yes they cost a fortune.

So in short choosing a golf ball which is right for you is important so as to not to wash your budget with red ink but also gives you an opportunity to improve your game.

Lavente Tan asked:

Since the beginning of golf, golf ball compression have been widely debated and discussed among golfers. As technology have advanced into the modern age, golf balls have become better than before. Just through technology alone, the evolution of golf ball has wiped out most of the hard core and old Balata wound golf ball out of the market. Today, majority of the golf balls are soft core low compression golf balls. Till then, golf ball compression really mattered but now, it is no longer the case.

Back then, if a 70 was put onto a golf ball, it would be termed as a women’s golf ball. Now, low compression golf balls take up majority of the market. You can have 4 piece compression golf balls like Pro V1x in the mid 90s and TP Red in the mid 80s. Compression numbers cannot be used to determine your golf ball selection anymore.

Golf ball compression can now be generally differentiated into two types. They are the core compression and the overall compression. In general, core compression is normally the main reason for the feel when you hit a driver on the golf ball. The reason is because the club face fully compress the core upon impact and that is what causes the feel on a full swing.

For overall compression, it refers to the amount of deformation undergone to the whole golf ball when it is being subjected to a compressive force. This is typically important in generating the feel, spin and also the energy transfered from club face to golf ball.

Taking a deeper look, golf ball compression cannot be used to determine the feel of the golf ball. Take the Wilson Staff Zip golf ball for example, with a zero compression core, the golf ball feels completely different from that of a Srixon Soft Feel. Both golf balls have a golf ball compression of 55. Hence compression does affect feel but it cannot be used to determine feel today.

In fact, it is used more in the lab to design the golf ball such as C.O.R, sound, spin rates and velocity. It is more of the interaction of the layers that produce and determine your feel than normal golf ball compression.

Let us not look just on the numbers but beyond them to determine which golf ball suits you best. Every single material that makes up the golf ball have it’s own property that will contribute to the energy transfer, spin, feel, velocity, launch angle etc. With the technology nowadays, multi-layered golf balls are used to control the deformation to push the feel, velocity, spin, launch angle and other distance factors into another level. It is indeed quite a revelation in today’s golf.

Putting your golf balls into the hole can never be easier if you know them well! The rise of golf into a global sport have been tremendous and you can spend hours just putting the ball into 18 holes! What a work out! Everyone loves it! Including me! But of course if you are just new into golf and wandering into the world of “a ball in 18 holes”, this is much complex than you can imagine. However, stay tune and i will introduce the basic things that you need to know.

When you first start out, be prepared to lose a lot of your precious golf balls. As your skills are not that skilled, you will find your golf balls in many other areas other than the fairway! Hence, your main priority at a start is to budget on them before you burn a hole in your pocket! These are the common type of names that you will normally come across when you purchase a golf ball to help you save cost!

Before you start, spend plenty of time at the golf range to improve your shots! The balls you should be playing around with are range balls. They cost a few bucks for a bucket and you can spend your time trying out various shots! After all, practice makes perfect!

Ok! Now you are ready to try out the course! It is time to shop for great cheap golf balls that will last you all the way. The first type you can take a look is used balls. It is the cheapest you can get out there! Various online shops and garage sales can be found selling these golf balls. Some make a living off collecting and selling them!

If you do not like the idea of using other people’s balls and want them new, you can go for X-outs. They are produced by branded companies but failed the quality control. Normally, the failure is just a slip up in look and feel rather than the ball. They are stamped with X and sold at a cheap price together with the rest.

Refurbished balls are another option. They are balls which have been repainted and re-branded so that it looks brand new. They would be a little more expensive than used golf balls but they are not the best to play with. You never know how much rounds have been played with on the ball till you played it. They are very good for practice but not serious rounds.

A better version would be closeout balls. They are found in the closeout bins of major online golf retailers as they are discontinued older brands. These companies just let them out on the cheap when they are phasing out old models.

What you would find in certain online shops are logo overrun golf balls. These golf balls are generally with logos of companies or organization but they were produced with a mistake in quantity or design. They are brand new balls and can be purchased at bulk discounts. A great value for money!

The last type would definitely be value balls! They are great balls which minimize spins and maximize distance with great corrosion resistance. At a start, these are the balls you can go for if you do not want other people’s used or unused goods. They can be found normally as 2 piece construction with a hard feel of compression rating in the near 100s.

I am in escrow on a home next to a 2 hole long range Private golf course, and the Flag pole for the hole is about 35 feet away from my kitchen.
What speed do the golf balls fly ? Could fast landing balls be the reason that more than a few of the cement tiles on the roof are cracking and breaking ?
Any other things I should be concerned about living so close??
I want to spend time outside in my yard which is even closer with my little dog.

I am about an 18 handicap and i have a quick club speed. I trying to find the right the ball for the high school golf team tryouts. I am about 5′10 and weigh 140 pounds, i have a cut shot but an occassional draw. My drive off the tee flies around 220 with a Nike Power Distance Fast Core. Unfortunatly these balls provide too much spin around the green for me and they usually roll off the green with and mid or low irons. Could you please help me choose a new golf ball so i can make the freshman team?
my high school team has a sponsership with Nike and Titleist, i could get any ball from either brand at less than half price. I would prefer it is one of the those brands

Ronald Piper asked:

If there is one aspect of your game that you can improve for very little money, it is choosing the right golf balls. Whilst you cannot improve your game massively without practice, patience and skill, getting the right golf balls can help speed up the process of improvement can give you an edge over your opponents. There are balls for every type of golfer, from those who require better control on the greens to golfers who want that extra bit of distance on their tee and iron shots. Whatever sort of game you have, here are some examples of the best golf balls around that will add something extra to your golf game.

Balls for practice

Getting better at golf is all about practice, and so it is important to have a good stock of practice golf balls to use. These balls still need to be of a good quality, but ones that perhaps you don’t mind losing if shots go wrong. Practice balls are usually cheaper, and so it is advisable to buy them in larger amounts. You can also get softer or basic plastic balls to use in your garden on park to practice shots without damaging property or hurting people around you. These balls are great if you just want to practice your swing without going to the driving range or golf course. Make sure you have a variety of practice balls to help you improve your game.

Balls for added control

There are some golf balls on the market at the moment that are great for those players who need to add control to their game. If you have the power but lack accuracy, choose a golf ball that will help you hit straighter and keep those shots on the fairway. Many balls have the ability to cut out backspin, meaning you can be sure your balls will stop on the greens where you place them rather than running away from the hole.

Balls for distance

Many of the golf balls on the market today are designed to give players more distance than ever before. These balls are hi-tech and can fly through the air at incredible speed. Particularly good for those players who can swing quickly, distance balls will allow you to hit the ball further than you have imagined doing before. If you are struggling with those par 5 holes and need the extra power, then a distance ball is a good choice.

Novelty balls

Not all golf balls are about serious technology and features though. There are plenty of interesting novelty balls on the market as well. From balls that flash and light up when they are hit to balls shaped like American footballs, there is something for everyone in the novelty ball market. If you want to have a little fun with your golf game, then novelty balls are a great item to purchase.
