Any ideas as to why I keep finding golfball shaped hair balls in my garden?

I know this looks hokey. But, somebody, please, take a look. These hairballs are sitting on a 4×4 fence post with grape leaves behind them. I’m tempted to cut one open, but I’m afraid it might be something endangered or rare. (especially since nobody seems to know what they are!)
Notice the hairball on the right… I pulled that one OUT of a pile of dog hair by that trailing hair you see.

The hair is to ball up as far as sizemaybe the wind is blowing it to get any larger are this balls hollow or packed tight.
