How “used” is a recycled golf ball?

I’ve seen some sales on recycled golf balls, and a hell of a lot cheaper than they would be new.
How different is a recycled golf ball to a brand new golf ball? does it really matter between brand new or recycled?
are there certain grades of recycled balls?
also, i noticed that after using a new golf ball after several shots or holes, they seem to get a much…softer feel. to be honest, i hate soft feeling golf balls and prefer the hard and rigid type of golf ball. (thats what she said)
Will recycled balls lack this hardness feeling?

Looks like others have answered the main question, so here’s a shot at your question on soft/hard feel…

Most recycled ball manufacturers pride themselves on selling a product that feels & performs like the original ball. That is, a recycled Pro V1 is supposed to be fairly soft and allow you to put various amounts of spin on it. So if you want a harder feel to your golf balls, stick to buying “distance” balls - these typically have the harder feeling to them.
