I have 15 balls and if I dont lose my ball and it is in half decent shape, I keep it.

If it gets lost or damaged considerably, I get a new ball from my bag and buy a new ball/s to keep a count of 15.

I dont buy balls brand new, I get a grade 2nd hand ones

The only time you really need to change your golf ball is if it's badly scuffed. A badly scuffed ball will affect it's aerodynamics. At the golf range you can notice it if you hit a ball with a bad gash in one side, it will spin erratically. That being said, it needs to be pretty badly scuffed for the average player to notice a difference. I have a friend that changes his ball after the slightest scuff, but his game (and mine) is not so precise that it would ever make a difference.

In addition, really old balls that have been hit alot lose their bounce. You can also notice this at cheap golf ranges that don't replace their balls often enough. The old overhit balls feel like rocks when you hit them and don't go as far. But your own balls will probably get scuffed badly long before you hit them often enough to get to such a bad rocklike state.
