You should start with a good beginner set and used golf balls as opposed to new. You don't need to spend lots of money on new balls. I buy from and they sell for half the price.

Try to get a cheepo golf set from a friend or ebay. Spend your $ on golf lessons. I'm one of those dummys that bought 1500$ golf clubs before trying to learn the game 1st. If you buy clubs w/o knowing how to play, you risk the chance of buying the wrong clubs and specs.

Realistically you do not need great equipment if you are just beginning. Save the money and invest in lessons with a club pro or teaching pro instead.
I could give you a bunch of options but when you are starting out you don't need tons of specifics either...so heres what you need:

10.5 degree Driver with a graphite shaft
5 wood with graphite shaft
steel shafted irons (4-Pitching Wedge)
56 degree Sand Wedge with a steel Shaft
putter (doesn't matter, whatever you think looks cool)

Golf Balls (there is no need to buy $45-a-dozen Pro V1's when you are just beginning, you will not be able to tell the difference in balls until you get better. I suggest Top-Flite Gamers. They are the best ball for the money)

Tees (you will probably prefer about 2 3/4 inch to 3 inch tees)

A golf bag (whatever looks cool)
A golf glove (should fit tightly)

Hope I could Help
